As states begin coronavirus changes, restaurants around the country are switching to a take out and delivery model while they’re being barred from holding dine-in customers.

The CDC has found no evidence that COVID-19 can be transmitted through food. Many customers are eager to order food to support their local businesses and are ordering takeout or delivery to keep beloved restaurants in business.

To stay safe during takeout, try to keep a six-foot distance from everyone you come into contact with in the restaurant. Try going during slower hours or waiting outside until your food is done. If you’re not feeling well, don’t leave your house.

If you’re getting delivery, ask the courier to drop the food on your doorstep, instead of handing it. Some delivery spots have this as a selection in a menu, if it’s not there, write it in the comments or notes section. If you call in delivery, request it that way.

For takeout or delivery, immediately throw away bags or containers and wash your hands thoroughly before eating and after touching the bag.

Restaurants are sharing their safety practice inside restaurants to protect employees. Lucas Sin, chef of Junzi Kitchen, explained to Forbes how he’s keeping customers and employees safe during the pandemic. His team washes hands every 30 minutes and throws out gloves between tasks, he explains, “We run kitchens like hospitals anyway.”
