There are few things I love more than sitting in a pub with a glass of red wine and a massive roast dinner in front of me.

Cooking a roast on the other hand? The effort always feels greater than the reward.

There’s what feels like hours of chopping vegetables, peeling potatoes, working out what time each component needs to go in and come out, and then there’s trying to remember how to make Yorkshire puddings rise. Oh, and there’s the washing up.

That paired with the fact we’re going to the supermarket much less and so carrying home a LOT more, means we’ve not had a roast dinner since before lockdown.

So, when our Sunday roast delivery arrived, so gleeful I was as I ran down the stairs to devour it my boyfriend just handed me the plate, laughed, and said “food really is the way to your heart, isn’t it?”.

Yes, it is. And The Italian Kitchen in Hanham is my new beau.

I know what you’re thinking. A restaurant called ‘The Italian Kitchen’ isn’t necessarily the first place you’d go for a classic British roast, but we’d seen someone post a rave review on Facebook and so gave them a message on a Monday morning to get our order in.

The vegetarian roast with the cauliflower cheese portion for two

My boyfriend went for the lamb and asked for a meat-free roast with extra potatoes and vegetables for me, as he couldn’t spot a vegetarian option on the menu.

So I was pleasantly surprised when a mushroom wellington arrived at the door. It was rich, creamy, and just what the doctor ordered on a drizzly Sunday afternoon.

The meals arrived in two foil trays with a sizeable cauliflower cheese in a separate container.

They both needed a minute in the microwave to warm up, but that’s understandable having been packaged up and driven a little more than two miles down the road. I’ve been served up colder roasts when the journey has been five steps from the kitchen…

Each dish came with a Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, red cabbage, green beans, carrots and broccoli. The cauliflower cheese was also included in the price of the main.

For me nothing beats a crispy potato and sadly these potatoes didn’t have much crisp on them, but they had a fantastic flavour and a fluffiness which more than made up for it.

The Yorkshire puddings were a little soggy by the time they made it to us, but still did their job in soaking up the lashings of gravy. If there is such a thing as too much gravy, the Italian Kitchen may have discovered it.

My boyfriend went for the lamb, polishing off every morsel before suggesting we order it again some time, so I can only take that as a good review.

His only regret was that we didn’t have any mint sauce in the house, so let this be a warning to you to stock up on your own condements.

The lamb roast from The Italian Kitchen

It cost just under £30 for both dishes – not bad for a delivered to your door service.

And the added bonus? Just two plates to wash up. We’ll definitely be ordering again.

The Italian Kitchen. 47 High St, Hanham, Bristol BS15 3DQ. 0117 961 4222. They’ll deliver anywhere within a two-mile radius.
