As Black Lives Matter protests sweep the country, Phoenix-based nonprofit Local First Arizona and others are calling on people to support black-owned businesses.

One list of black-owned restaurants has been making the rounds on social media and originated from Chandler entrepreneur LaNée JavetBolen, who goes by LaNée Javet and owns a business coaching company calledUpscale Noire. She first published the list in 2019 with her Meetup group, Phoenix Black Collective.

Javet was prompted to compile the list for people who were new in town and asking for suggestions. She also wanted people living in the Valley to discover new places so they can spread their support to lesser-known restaurants, she said.

She’s glad to see the list circulating around, but she hopes people continue to support these restaurants even when protests aren’t making headlines.

“The thing is, other communities only take notice of black pain and suffering when it’s nationalized. But the reality is, you can participate and support every day, locally,” Javet said.

The heightened attention on black-owned businesses comes as protesters nationwide are marching to decry the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man.

Floyd died May 25 when Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, pinned his knee down on Floyd’s neck as Floyd was handcuffed on the ground, crying out that he couldn’t breathe. The same day in Phoenix, a Department of Public Safety trooper shot and killed 28-year-old Dion Johnson, who the trooper found asleep in a vehicle parked at Loop 101 at Tatum Boulevard.

“I always commend and give praise to people that have the boots on the ground,” Javet said in regards to protesters. “If that’s their superpower and they have the capability to do it, I salute them.”

Devan Cunningham, who works as a private chef and owns a catering business called The Good Food Table, said he temporarily shut down his business because of the coronavirus pandemic. He believes the COVID-19 health crisis compounds the injustices already occurring in the country.

“We appreciate your support this week, but we’ll also appreciate your support next week,” Cunningham said. “It’s not going to be a quick fight, a short fight over in a few days. Just supporting for one week won’t solve things in the long run, although we do appreciate that.”

The following businesses may have temporarily closed during the statewide curfew or coronavirus pandemic. Please check ahead.
