More than 30 vendors will sell food, drinks and other goods out of The Village in Glendale starting Friday, Aug. 14, at 5 p.m. when the holistic vegan marketplace opens for the first time.
The “multi-tenant small business launchpad” is the brainchild of Kristine Parker, owner of the mobile juice bar So Juicy Cafe, and Nadira Jenkins-El of The Cutting Board Bakery and Cafe in Mesa. Parker bought the The Village location last year and has worked with Jenkins-El to make their shared dream a reality: a plant-based community that highlights “melanated businesses,” according to Jenkins-El.
“The concept came from us wanting to provide opportunities for others,” she said of the marketplace idea. “We can survive and grow, and do community projects together … and really make a difference together.”
What is The Village in Glendale?
The Village property consists of two buildings in Glendale’s Catlin Court Historic District: One will house Cosmic Vegans, which is Jenkins-El’s vegan marketplace, and the other will contain vegan food and drink vendors including Cuties Lemonade, Raul’s Cocina and Churro Gonutz.
Cosmic Vegans will carry a wide variety of products such as crystals, herbal supplements, grab-and-go food and clothing, Jenkins-El said. The idea for Cosmic Vegans came from her wanting a “one-stop shop” where she could pick out products without questioning if the item she wanted to purchase was vegan and in line with her ethical principals.
Many of the food vendors are accepting or requiring preorders, so customers can order ahead for contactless purchase and pickup. A running list of vendors and food that will be at the soft opening can be found on The Village Instagram page at www.instagram.com/thevillageinglendale.
For the time being, The Village will be open only on weekends, so anyone who wants to visit is advised to check social media to see which businesses will be offering their products there on a certain day.
