With more than 150,000 COVID-19 deaths and approximately 5.2 million confirmed cases in the United States, there’s still a long way to go before things can go back to “normal” in the U.S–especially considering the increase in cases as a result of states and schools reopening. Amidst this whole pandemic, we also have to worry about the upcoming elections.
Voter disenfranchisement, voter suppression, and gerrymandering have been pervasive roadblocks to fair and accurate elections. Now the pandemic is making things even worse as the need to social distance will make in-person voting nearly impossible this November. Thus, many people are advocating for universal mail-in voting.
Unfortunately, Trump has been trying to sabotage the USPS for months. In June, he appointed Louis DeJoy, one of Republicans’ large donors with no USPS experience, as the new postmaster general. DeJoy started making cuts to slow down the mail, fired postal executives, and making other detrimental changes to the USPS. On August 13, Trump admitted to doing so in order to make vote-by-mail much more difficult. In an interview with Fox Business’s Maria Bartiromo, Trump explained, “If they don’t get [extra funding for states and the USPS], that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting because they’re not equipped to have it.”
