Many people’s lives revolve around various electronics. From the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep, technology permeates almost every aspect of the day. With this kind of reliance on technology comes the want, and sometimes need, to always get the newer, upgraded version of each electronic. Sometimes it’s just for the new features, but sometimes it’s because the old version broke or is having various issues by no fault of its owner.

Around 54m tonnes of electronic waste, also known as “e-waste,” was generated in 2019. Most e-waste is dumped or burned, rather than being recycled, which is extremely harmful to the environment and the health of people who live near and work near it. A survey by ecoATM Gazelle found that only 25% of Americans recycle electronic devices. A lot of e-waste is also improperly recycled, which can cause fires in recycling plants.

In 2019, Samsung announced that they would start using more sustainable packaging and use less plastic in the electronics themselves. However, there are still so many more companies that have yet to make any significant changes. Furthermore, most electronic companies assemble devices in ways that make them impossible to repair in most cases. Some also believe that these tech companies deliberately make their products have a short lifespan so that people spend money to replace them more often. This is extremely harmful to consumers, people exploited for the materials, and the environment. Sign this petition to demand that electronics makers create an industry-wide agreement that puts the “right to repair” as a cornerstone of their sustainability policy. Electronics companies need to start making their products last longer and more easily repairable to lessen e-waste!
