The United States will not be joining the international group to develop and distribute a coronavirus vaccine. According to the White House, because the initiative is tied to the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States declined to participate.
While 170 other countries have joined the COVAX initiative to develop and distribute the vaccine, “The United States will continue to engage our international partners to ensure we defeat this virus, but we will not be constrained by multilateral organizations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China,” White House spokesperson Judd Deere said in a statement, “This President will spare no expense to ensure that any new vaccine maintains our own FDA’s gold standard for safety and efficacy, is thoroughly tested, and saves lives.”
The decision follows numerous decisions by President Trump to ignore global alliances in favor of isolating at home. The President notified the United Nations that he would formally withdraw from the WHO in July.
Numerous vaccine trials are underway in the United States, including 2 in Phase 3 trials. “Under President Trump’s leadership, vaccine and therapeutic research, development, and trials have advanced at unprecedented speed to deliver groundbreaking, effective medicines driven by data and safety and not held back by government red tape,” Deere said.
Scientists believe that the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus, started at an exotic animal market in Wuhan, China. You can help stop the incidence of viruses like these by signing this petition to ban the wildlife trade.
