Pet owners know how special the bond with an animal can be. Pets become our closest confidants, the shoulder that we cry on, and our best friends. If or when anything bad happens to them, it can feel like the end of the world. They are a part of our family and we want to do everything we can to protect them.
Sadly, in some countries, pet owners have to worry about their dogs and cat getting stolen and slaughtered for meat. According to In Defense of Animals, an estimated 2.5 million dogs are raised and killed each year for meat in South Korea. Dogs that are slaughtered for consumption suffer terrible conditions such as starvation and physical abuse. The trade is not only completely inhumane, but it also threatens the transmission of rabies, cholera, trichinellosis, and other diseases.
In July, Kim Jong-un mandated that all North Koreans must surrender their pet dogs to the government because he considers dogs a symbol of Western “decadence.” There have been reports of authorities identifying houses and confiscating pets to be euthanized, put in zoos, or sold to dog meat restaurants. While he has not definitively stated that these dogs will be used for food, it is very likely that they will as many people in North Korea are starving and at risk for malnutrition due to floods and the economy. There are other ways to feed the people of North Korea without stealing their beloved pets and slaughtering them for food.
