In the land of carnitas, pollos asados and fajitas, vegan restaurateurs are finding an impressive foothold. One of the newest eateries to join the growing lineup of plant-based options in San Antonio is a takeout and delivery operation dubbed Tidy Ben’s Sloppy Joes.

Launched by Ben Cardenas in August, Tidy Ben’s specialized in vegan sloppy Joe sliders made from plant-based crumbles prepared in in four flavors mounted on sweet and squishy Hawaiian-style buns ($8 for three sliders). I recently noshed my way through the menu, which also includes options for piling all that sloppy goodness on top of tater tots ($4) or Fritos ($5).

San Antonio will love the Sloppy Fiesta option, which is loaded with jalapeño, onion, a heady dash of cumin and other aromatics found in nearly every kitchen across the city. The Sloppy BBQ will satisfy sticky, sweet and smoky cravings, and is perfect topped with a few slices of crisp dill pickle.

The classic Sloppy Sloppy and Curry Sloppy represent two extremes. The former has all the sweet and savory childhood nostalgia you’d expect in a sloppy Joe. The latter takes the sloppy Joe in an unexpected international direction pulling from a global pantry of spices for a unique take on an all-American sandwich.

Tidy Ben’s Sloppy Joes are available for pickup 4:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1430 N. Flores St. Delivery through the Frnd-Ships app is also available. For more information or to place an order, visit tidybens.com or Facebook: @tidybens.
