WAYNE — Whole Foods Market will open to customers at Valley Ridge shopping center this week.

The store, which will feature a fast-casual burger bar, offering grass-fed and plant-based patties and a lineup of eight craft beers, will be the first Whole Foods in Passaic County.

The 40,235-square-foot store will sell thousands of products that will be trucked in from area suppliers, according to a statement released in advance of the opening at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

The supermarket’s opening was arguably the most anticipated in the county for some time.

The Texas-based grocer announced that it would open a store at the 9.3-acre strip mall more than two years ago, but it kept the exact date under wraps until recently.

The new supermarket will anchor the shopping center, at the corner of Preakness Avenue and Valley Road, in expanded space last occupied by now-bankrupt A&P.

Among the suppliers that will have products for sale at the store are Naturalvert, a maker of organic granola, in Hawthorne: Paper Plane Coffee Co., of Montclair; and Sweet Portugal Bakery, of Newark.

The burger bar, called Market Burger, is unique to the Wayne store, said Chris Nguyen, culinary development chef for the chain’s northeast region.

Half of its beers on tap will come from microbreweries in New Jersey, the chef said. The bar’s menu will include four types of burgers, two types of french fries, onion rings and appetizers: chicken tenders, coconut shrimp, mozzarella sticks and Caesar and house salads. Choices for milkshakes will include classic flavors and a vegan option, called the “Study Break Shake.”

For those shopping on a tighter schedule, a prepared meals section will have grab-and-go pizza, quesadillas, sandwiches, sushi and a variety of casseroles.
