This week, vegan food brand Field Roast Grain Co. announced the release of new vegan cheese flavors and formats under its Chao Creamery brand, which will begin hitting store shelves in the coming weeks. Currently, the brand offers two flavors of vegan cheese slices—Creamy Original and Tomato Cayenne—made with coconut oil and a fermented tofu ingredient that delivers an umami taste. The expansion includes two new flavors of slices: Smoked Original and jalapeño-spiced Spicy Original and two new formats: a grateable Creamy Original Block and shreds in Creamy Original and Mexican Style Blend (a mix of its Creamy Original and Tomato Cayenne flavors). The Chao Creamery Original Shreds will be available at more than 1,000 Walmart locations for a suggested retail price of $5.99 (prices may vary by location).
In 2017, Canadian meat brand Maple Leaf Foods acquired both Field Roast and Lightlife for $120 million and $140 million, respectively, and created Chicago-based Greenleaf Foods in 2018 as a subsidiary company that independently operates its growing plant-based business. “We took the fan-favorite Chao Creamery Creamy Original and expanded it into new flavors and forms that give consumers even more flavor potential in the kitchen,” Greenleaf President Dan Curtin said. “These products are unlike anything else that exists in the dairy-free cheese category. It’s a taste that only Chao can deliver.”
In January, the Original Creamy flavor of Chao cheese also became available at 150 Costco locations in the Midwest, Southwest, Texas, and Ontario, Canada region.
